Running in Windy Weather – Top Tips!
- 🌬️ Check the forecast – Look at wind speeds and gusts before heading out. Avoid running during severe weather warnings.
- 🏃 Slow your pace – Running into a headwind takes more effort. Focus on effort rather than pace.
- 💨 Start against the wind – Where possible, run into the wind on your outward journey so you have a tailwind coming home.
- 👕 Dress appropriately – Wear lightweight, close-fitting layers to reduce wind resistance and keep warm.
- 🌳 Choose sheltered routes – Built-up areas and sheltered paths can offer protection from strong winds.
- ⚠️ Watch for flying debris – Be aware of falling branches, loose objects and anything blowing across your path.
- 🚗 Take care near roads – Sudden gusts can affect your balance, particularly near passing vehicles.
- 👟 Shorten your stride – Keep your steps controlled and maintain good balance during strong gusts.
- 🤝 Run together – Running in a group can provide encouragement and some shelter from the wind.
- 💧 Stay hydrated – You still lose fluids when running in cold, windy conditions.
- 🌡️ Beware of wind chill – Strong winds can make temperatures feel much colder, especially when you’re sweaty.
- 🛑 Know when to call it off – If conditions become dangerous, cut your run short or move your training indoors.
Remember: A windy run can be great resistance training, but safety always comes before Strava! 💪
